Announcing Metabolic Health Initiative

Synergy is building a Metabolic Health Initiative (MHI). The purpose is to increase awareness of Nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) caused by fat accumulation in the liver. The initiative will begin in October and will focus on educating individuals about the importance of metabolic health.

Metabolic Health

Metabolic health is defined as having ideal blood sugar levels, triglycerides, high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, blood pressure, and waist circumference without using medications. These are factors directly related to a person’s risk for heart disease, diabetes, and stroke. Poor metabolic health can lead to NASH, diabetes, hypertension, obesity, etc.

Heart disease and fatty liver disease can be linked

With more and more Americans developing fatty liver disease each year, the need for educational and interventional programs increases. The MHI seeks to promote metabolic health through diagnosis, education, and promotion of targeted treatments, including potential clinical trials.

The MHI will provide the following educational resources, free screenings, etc. to area participants:

  • Free exam by physicians
  • Free laboratory evaluation:
    • Blood Count, liver blood tests, electrolytes, blood cholesterol hemoglobin A1c
  • Free Liver Fibroscan
    • Liver fibroscan assess for the presence of liver fat as well as liver fibrosis that may cause cirrhosis and liver failure
  • Educational counseling and information material to reduced or reverse fatty liver disease
  • Referral to area internists and gastroenterologists for ongoing medical care

Modern Lifestyle Disease

Fatty liver disease occurs when there is too much fat storage in the liver. Over time, this can trigger chronic inflammation that can progressively damage the liver and lead to NASH, cirrhosis, liver cancer, and liver failure. While chronic alcohol abuse is a top contributing factor, unhealthy lifestyles have led to a growing epidemic from Western fatty diets and sedentary lives.

We help develop safer, more effective therapies

The progressive damage from fatty liver disease can be prevented, stopped, or even reversed. The liver is an organ that can regenerate itself. It’s also why those at risk of fatty liver disease need to know what their risk is, so they can take preventative measures to heal the liver before the damage is irreversible.
