The Benefits of Our Metabolic Health Initiative

Some time has passed since we first introduced you to our Metabolic Health Initiative (MHI). The new year is fast approaching, so we wanted to review the benefits of our Metabolic Health Initiative so you can get a jump start on those 2022 goals.

What is the Metabolic Health Initiative?

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is America’s most common chronic liver condition. Approximately 25% of U.S. adults have NAFLD. From that percentage, another 20% will develop Nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH)- a more severe form of NAFLD.

The MHI seeks to promote liver health by providing the following FREE services to area participants and potential treatment through clinical trials:

  • Physician exam
  • Laboratory testing to evaluate blood count, liver blood tests, electrolytes, blood cholesterol, and hemoglobin A1c.
  • Liver fibroscan to assess liver health and detect the presence of liver disease.
  • Educational counseling and informational material on how participants can reduce or reverse fatty liver disease.
  • Referral to area specialists for ongoing medical care.

MHI Benefits

Having NAFLD increases your risk for NASH and can lead to liver damage, cirrhosis, liver cancer, and liver failure. Most people don’t even know they have fatty liver disease because symptoms typically manifest in the later stages when the liver is already damaged. Anyone can develop NAFLD, though various factors increase your risk.

Our goal is to reduce the prevalence of fatty liver disease in America, one community and one person at a time. Early detection saves lives when it comes to liver disease. Here are some other benefits of our program to consider:

  • It’s FREE! No insurance is required to access services. This expands access to diagnostic testing where it would have been unobtainable before due to cost or not having medical insurance.
  • If your evaluation results show the presence of fatty liver disease, our staff will talk to you about enrolling in research studies that may help. Participation in any study is voluntary and not required to take advantage of the MHI.
  • The educational information and counseling part of the MHI equips individuals at risk with how to keep their liver healthy to delay or prevent the onset of liver disease. Those who already have liver disease can slow, pause, or reverse disease progression with the resources gained.
